La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) is a perfect mix of archaic charm and topicality, a wide space, in the name of comfort, in which the attention to detail lives perfectly with a minimal footprint.
The building, located in the picturesque and central District of the old fish market of Catania, a few steps from the scenic Piazza del Duomo, was erected in the eighteenth century, during the great reconstruction post-earthquake of the Val di Noto and, after years of Splendour, in the last century had fallen into decay, suffering, like many other noble palaces of the city center, a senseless dismemberment of the spaces.
The renovation, directed by the owner, started from the essence of the building, and then continued under the banner of simplicity, as if to want to re-emerge the original imprint of the structure, through the patient elimination of many questionable modifications made over the decades.
Thus the floors, the partitions, the countertops and the layers of paint have left place to the precious woods, to the refined frames, to the finishes of the precious floors, finally giving the house the authenticity of its compositional system and the harmony of materials back.
The new layout of the rooms has been designed to give order and to receive and welcome, at the same time ensuring ample private space both to its inhabitants and to the guests. In the center of the apartment there is a large common area dedicated to conviviality, in which the neutral tones of the walls and the floor are interrupted here and there by the sudden notes of color of the original coatings and a few, simple pieces of furniture, obtained mostly from local antique markets.
But it is in the kitchen that you breathe the true essence and spirit of the house. It clearly denotes the love for good food and conviviality. Made of steel and super equipped, almost a gastronomic workshop, it is presented as the venue for pleasant evenings among friends where, surrounded by jars and jars of jams and preserves strictly home-made, dishes of all kinds are brought to life.
The master suite with two beds is a testament, on the other hand, for the love of relaxation and care, starting from the bathroom, endowed with every comfort and the center of which, dominates a large tub.
The idea behind the design of the guest room is quite original, almost entirely occupied by a large sofa, made (by the owner's design) by virtuous leather artisans, which stems from the need to have a space reserved for guests but that could also be used and also lived on a daily basis.
But the real highlight of the apartment is its beautiful terrace overlooking the façade of the building. Thanks to the splendid Sicilian climate, for most of the year the terrace is the heart of the house, the ideal place for aperitifs at sunset, overlooking the most beautiful square of the city. There is Wi-Fi coverage throughout.

Catania is nowadays one of the most vibrant cities in Italy and offers a variety of entertaining activities. It is very much a 24 hour town and thanks to its local traditional shops and its traditional markets, which still compete with the big chains, as well as being a popular destination for university students.
One of the coolest areas for evening entertainment is without a doubt, the “Golden block” in the historic part of town, situated between Piazza Duomo, Piazza Manganelli and Piazza Teatro Massimo. Amongst the baroque architecture, you will find night clubs, always very busy, which during the summer time make use of the outdoor spaces and transform themselves into the famous “Caffe’ Concerto”, a mix of music, shows and multimedia events. The “Caffe’ Concerto” were inaugurated 20 years ago by the local council in collaboration with the local commercial association and are responsible for birth of the “MOVIDA” in the historic centre. As you can see, the entertaining options are never-ending, there are theatres, disco clubs, wine bars and many other shops ready to satisfy any need and desire, whether it be in Arab, Japanese, Irish or Brazilian Style! Many places also offer live music.
